"TO DEVELOP A WORK, YOU NEED SPACE, TIME, INSPIRATION AND VIEWERS"
Opening: 22 March 2018 Exhibition dates: 23 March – 25 April 2018
Ever since he began his studies, Simon Nelke has engaged with human figures with remarkable perseverance. He makes them the protagonists of his works, which follow the principle of building up and erasing. Uncovering what lies beneath, layer by layer, bringing it to light: it is this form of artistic creation that drives the Hamburg-based painter. The layering and partial scraping away of the oil paint form the basis of his distinctive technique. Through this process, earlier parts of the painting re-emerge. Dreamy and almost mystical motifs from the East and the Orient frequently feature in Simon Nelke’s paintings, and the shades of violet, blue, green and pink create an exotic visual atmosphere.
