Christof Paul: Discovery
2017
…handmade, carved from wood!
With great patience, keen observation, sensitivity and, of course, sculptural skill. The artist Christof Paul, who studied in the figurative sculpture class in Nuremberg, works on his figures with calm and dedication. He emphasises particular details: a posture, a gaze, a gesture, an accessory, and adds narrative elements to his works. He achieves a distinctive effect through the tactile contrast between finely polished surfaces, such as on the faces of his figures, and roughly textured surfaces, which emphasise the organic nature of the material. The Galerie Schimming is showing the artist in Hamburg for the first time with a selection of wooden sculptures created specifically for this exhibition. At the heart of Christof Paul’s body of work is always his ‘Spaceman’, through whose visor we can see what surrounds him and what he discovers.
