Painting of the 21st Century II
20 – 28 September 2018
Lois Renner is presenting a new solo exhibition in Hamburg.
Alongside monumental works from the Salzburg Museum, two new series by the artist will be presented.
Lois Renner’s solo exhibition ‘Painting of the 21st Century II’ follows on from his retrospective at the Salzburg Museum, which was on display at the Neue Residenz in Salzburg until January 2018. Director Prof. Dr Martin Hochleitner invited the Austrian artist to exhibit there and curated the solo exhibition, which is set to tour further museums in the coming years. A key piece from the exhibition, “Spring (Makart)”, will be on display this autumn at the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz.
The floral ‘Antwerp’ series serves as inspiration for Lois Renner’s new ‘Amsterdam’ series, in which floral still lifes are reimagined and executed using his latest overpainting technique. Renner adds a further step to the elaborate production process of arranging, photographing and overpainting, once again emphasising the painterly aspect of his work.
For the first time, Renner is also showing smaller formats. The so-called ‘Museum’ series brings together his painterly skill in small watercolours, which are rendered as photographs mounted behind acrylic and, as a counterpart to the artist’s favourite format (240 x 180 cm), are produced this time in a more manageable size. The motifs, inspired by various museum visits, explore how contemporary viewers engage with works of art-historical significance in a museum setting and translate this into a typically Renner-esque approach.
The title “Painting of the 21st Century II” was chosen in reference to his solo exhibition two years ago, which was also shown in the museum spaces of the Barlach Halle K.
