'Humiliated & Insulted' Special Show

Tilo Baumgärtel

7 February – 6 April 2019

Tilo Baumgärtel designed the set for the play The Humiliated and Insulted, based on Dostoevsky’s novel, which was directed by Sebastian Hartmann at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden. During the performance, the actors climb five-metre-high ladders to paint a stage set live at every performance, working together under the artist’s guidance. The exhibition “NELLY” showcases a selection of these very set designs, as well as Tilo Baumgärtel’s film, which formed part of the production. The exhibition was previously on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig at the start of the year. It is now coming to Hamburg.

Alongside the stage designs, Tilo Baumgärtel has created a series of smaller works which he describes as “picture-within-a-picture works”. These will also be shown as part of the exhibition, initially at Barlach Halle K and later at the Galerie am Klosterstern.

Grand Opening: Thursday, 7 February 2019, 7.00 pm, Barlach Halle K (Klosterwall 13, 20095 Hamburg) Museum exhibition: 8 February to 13 February 2019, Barlach Halle K, daily 12 noon–6.00 pm
