Hunt Slonem – Birds, Bunnies & Butterflies
7 September – 4 November 2023
New York-based artist Hunt Slonem (b. 1951) will be in attendance at the opening reception on Thursday, 7 September 2023, at Galerie Schimming, Hamburg-Harvestehude, Jungfrauenthal 4.
The American painter, sculptor and printmaker became known internationally for his vibrantly coloured expressionist paintings. For decades Slonem has been painting the ‘three big B’s’, bunnies, birds and butterflies, sometimes realistically, sometimes in part abstractly. He gives his motifs a personality of their own, in keeping with the frame chosen for each. Endowing them with a gentle, charming and independent character, he gives each motif an individual appearance through his seemingly inexhaustible use of colour. His attention to detail and the careful technical and creative execution on the canvas are rooted in a long-standing fascination with and observation of these species in their natural habitats.
The New York-based artist’s entire body of work forms an integral part of international private and museum collections. Well over 50 museums worldwide, including the National Art Gallery in Washington D.C., the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in Massachusetts, the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, the Würth Museum in Künzelsau, and the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, have acquired works by Hunt Slonem.
