Stohead: Smoke in my Periphery
8 June – 9 July 2016
Our first solo exhibition featuring STOHEAD showcases works in both large and small formats, as well as his wall installations. He offers an insight into his most recent creative phase, which, as ever, is underpinned by calligraphy and the theme of writing, with the artist drawing particular attention to the decline of individual handwriting due to digitalisation. In doing so, his art seeks to preserve the charm of self-expression, using lettering combined with an expressive riot of colour to visually demonstrate how calligraphic elements dissolve into abstraction, just as cursive script, now largely obsolete, seems to be disappearing. In his current works, STOHEAD, in an initial stage of the creative process, guides the radically and seemingly haphazardly applied colours with a sure hand into his characteristic calligraphic letterforms. He allows colours, shapes and symbols to clash expressively and to temper one another, not only in urban spaces on a wide variety of surfaces, but also on canvas and paper using tools he has made himself.
