Alias

Following two group exhibitions in Hamburg featuring artists from the Leipzig School, we are presenting the works of Tilo Baumgärtel and Nadin Maria Rüfenacht in dialogue with one another. Using the media of painting and photography, this artistic duo develops intuitively organised visual worlds which, despite their different media-based starting points, reveal surprising points of convergence. Both artists playfully explore reflections on nature and culture, demonstrating how these categories can both complement and contradict one another. The narrative atmosphere that emerges from both the camera and the painter’s hand causes the technical constraints of the respective media to fade into the background in favour of the overarching project of understanding and communication. At their core, the images of both artists are an expression of atmospherically dense visual creations that seek both to entertain and to challenge, whilst constantly exploring the traditions and potential boundaries of their respective media.
