What’s left!?

To mark the start of the season, we are presenting the solo exhibition “Was bleibt!?” at our branch on Sylt, featuring Simon Nelke’s latest works. With his distinctive style, Simon Nelke has made a name for himself beyond Hamburg as well.

The deliberate destruction of the picture’s surface by partially tearing away layers of paint and revealing earlier stages of the work forms the basis of Simon Nelke’s distinctive technique. In this form of artistic creation, the artist is constantly confronted with the question of what remains of the original concept behind the painting. Philosophically, this approach reflects the great question that preoccupies each and every one of us… namely, what remains of our lives.

In the artist’s works, abstraction sometimes predominates, at other times figuration: mystical-looking figures emerge from abstract backgrounds.
