Noémi Kiss: Connected
7 – 7 April 2016
This spring, Galerie Schimming is showcasing not only its established editions but also a selection of current works: new to the gallery is Noémi Kiss. When Daniel Spörri discovered Noémi Kiss’s work at an architect’s studio, he was keen to exhibit it straight away. The artist, who lives and works in Vienna, focuses primarily on materiality, drawing on the gentle collision of seemingly incompatible elements. In doing so, she imbues the material with new meaning and appreciation: concrete, acrylic paint, fabrics and carpets are transformed into new objects, taking on a fresh identity. These range from unusual spider-like inlays, which on closer inspection reveal themselves to be carpet collages embedded in concrete, to carpet installations that impress not only through their knotting techniques. Laboriously knotted or woven by hand, carpets tell stories that cling to them or are woven into them. Traditionally and symbolically charged patterns stand out from the background through their silhouettes, and their very existence is characterised by vitality and playful layers.
Alongside Noemi Kiss’s exhibition, Galerie Schimming is showing a series of limited-edition works by well-known artists such as Alex Katz, Tim Eitel, Daniel Richter, Thomas Ruff, Julian Hoffmann, Candida Höfer, Rainer Fetting and many more. Over the past few years, we have assembled a selection of attractive works for this exhibition, which we present for the first time in the ‘Masterpieces’ exhibition.
