About Rike Bewer

Rike Bewer, born in Munich in 1994, lives and works in Halle an der Saale. Since 2020, she has been studying painting there at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Prof. Tilo Baumgärtel’s class. Since early 2022, she has been a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation’s programme for gifted students.

In Rike Bewer’s process-driven painterly work, the ambiguity of things becomes a manic obsession.

The paintings speak of loneliness, of conflict and of weariness, but also of realising one has been mistaken. The transition from one state to another lasts as briefly as the moment it takes to grasp it. The works arise from an intense engagement with this moment of transition. From flight to fall. The phenomenon of slipping represents a key moment, as a defining feature of its form is its ambiguity. Figures that lose their form, become abstract and reconnect elsewhere. The paintings reveal a unity of opposites without having to resort to constant stereotypes.
