About Hans Kupelwieser
Hans Kupelwieser’s artworks are characterised by the use of various media, with the spatial dimension of objects being a recurring theme. From 1997 onwards, the artist expanded his initially conceptual engagement with photography by working directly with the medium itself. In his series of photograms, conventional photographic techniques such as lenses, special effects and central perspective play no part. Instead, factors such as the transparency of the objects, movement and exposure time are emphasised. Through flat representations of three-dimensional objects, Hans Kupelwieser explores the relationships between image, representation and object, and illustrates that objects can take on a variety of forms.
In one of his more recent cycles, Hans Kupelwieser focused on everyday industrial materials. He wondered to what extent these materials could be altered or transformed through controlled chance, and processed Plexiglas, for example, using various methods. The result of these controlled experiments are objects that have been compressed, folded or cut into blocks, challenging the viewer’s perception. In addition to the sculptures, photograms of textiles explore the translucency of the fabrics and are reminiscent of organic, plant-like forms.
