About Kasper Eistrup
Kasper Eistrup, born in 1973 in Charlottenlund, Denmark, is a visual artist based in Copenhagen whose artistic practice encompasses painting, drawing, collage and installation. Although he gained international recognition in the 1990s and 2000s as the frontman of the Danish rock band Kashmir, Eistrup has carved out a distinct position for himself within the contemporary visual arts over the past decade. His work has been exhibited in museums and institutions in Denmark and abroad, including the National History Museum at Frederiksborg Castle and the CCA Andratx in Mallorca.
In Denmark, Kasper Eistrup continues to be represented by the Martin Asbæk Gallery in Copenhagen; however, no works are currently available there, as the waiting list is around four years. Outside Denmark, Galerie Schimming represents his work exclusively.
From performance to image
Eistrup’s transition from music to the visual arts was not a break, but a return. Drawing has always been a central component of his creative practice. The discipline of the line, with its rhythm, its tension and its structural clarity, remains fundamental to his work to this day. Unlike many artists who enter the art world via academic training, Eistrup developed his visual language as a self-taught artist, through continuous engagement with art history, material research and institutional dialogue.
The Fragment as Structure
A key concept in Eistrup’s work is the fragment. His works often appear as multi-layered constellations of images, lines and traces of material: vintage photographs, archival references, architectural structures and expressive painterly gestures coexist within a single composition. Rather than descending into chaos, these elements are carefully balanced to create a tension between order and decay.
Material and memory
Materiality plays a crucial role. Eistrup frequently uses vintage paper, reclaimed wood, rusty surfaces and found objects. These materials introduce a sedimented memory into the work: layers that connect the past and the present. In 2018, he presented the exhibition Fragmentarium at Frederiksborg Castle and completed the official portrait of the Danish Crown Prince.
