About Edgar Leciejewski

Having gained an international outlook through numerous stays abroad, including in Vietnam, Canada and Switzerland, Edgar Leciejewski has close ties to the city of Leipzig, where he still lives and works today, and to the art scene centred around the Alte Spinnerei. Born in Berlin in 1977, he completed his degree in photography in 2011 as a master student of Prof. Christopher Muller and Prof. Peter Piller at the Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig.

His photographs weave a complex web of various details before the viewer’s eye; these details invite analysis of their individual meanings and the creation of a coherent whole. Whilst his ‘Scene in a Library’ is particularly rich in detail and conveys both content that is obvious at first glance and elements hidden upon closer inspection, in his ‘Fabric Images’ Edgar Leciejewski uses similarly symbolic means, but in a significantly more reduced form, to portray important female figures from culture and society. In these exquisitely crafted works, he moves beyond the medium of photography alone and creates an expanded relationship with reality by bringing the fabrics, in their actual materiality, from within the image to the surface. Everyday yet culturally and historically significant objects, such as fire or the egg, serve as motifs in his visual worlds, which cannot be deciphered at first glance.
