Julian Hoffmann

The artwork grows, blossoms and flourishes. Julian Hoffmann, an artist of drastic transformations, has created new works from the flotsam of our consumer society. He finds and seeks out, and brings together things that do not belong together. The result is, as it were, a sun rising from the ‘debris’, the waste, where at first there was only a yellow blot.

Julian Hoffmann’s works have many facets. They are multi-layered: different planes within the ideal space of the picture overlap. The picture supports, such as wood or old windows, are collaged with foreign materials and painted behind glass. It is difficult to distinguish between figure and ground. A flood of words, phrases and letters flows through the pictures.

Julian Hoffmann’s art does not confront us with the full extent of these contradictions. It is not his aim to replace art with documentation, nor to distil a panacea from it. He selects the themes and motifs of his art from lived experience.
